The Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 106 2010 Junior Sailor of the Year is Aviation Structural Mechanic 2nd Class (AW) Salvatore Catalano.

As the assistant leading petty officer for the Corrosion Branch, Catalano led and trained 14 personnel in the completion of 920 discrepancies and 240 special inspections on 42 F/A-18 E/F Super Hornets. He qualified four collateral duty inspectors, six apprentice and four journeyman corrosion technicians, which resulted in a 40 percent increase in efficiency within the work center. Personally selected as the command’s Alternate Hazardous Material Program manager, he methodically assisted in the tracking and management of more than $270,000 in hazardous material with accuracy and safety. As the aircraft divisional career counselor, he personally ensured 20 Perform-to-Serve applications were screened and submitted on time, which resulted in 20 personnel approved with 18 personnel reenlisting.

Catalano consistently demonstrated versatility, innovation and perseverance in an environment of high tempo operations and has forged an exemplary relationship of trust and concern.

In his off-duty time, Catalano has completed 54 credit hours through Embry Riddle University, working toward his bachelor’s degree in professional aeronautics. He has also volunteered as an assistant coach with Virginia Beach Mustangs Pop Warner Football League, participated in the 2009 Shamrock Marathon and the "Clean the Base" 5K race.
